Superintendent Devin Padavil shares updates with THS regarding the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

hello I'm Devin Padawan superintendent here in Taylor ISD and I am going to be interviewing with the world-famous Louis Nino and he's going to be talking about questions related to what next year is going to look like in our plans as it relates to health and safety so seriously are we going to bring back safe everybody back into the Patriots they like students we only got like 3 weeks of school left over for this year over trying to do is just kind of stay the course so everything we're doing is going to stay as normal so we have remote learning for three more weeks without wearing masks social distancing cleaning protocols all that next year we're going to do is not as far as what learning looks like we're going to try to get as many students back in school is possible we're going to try to return to a typical School looks like and when I say that we still want to provide options for families that have like significant health concerns but otherwise we want to try to make sure that all of our students are back in school because we feel like that's actually what's best from when when students are in school we know that we can make sure that they're learning every I need to be learned we can make sure that they're doing well and we can make sure we're taking care of them okay we're bringing up the house and saying how will you know if students they have husbands and how will we get the entire situation next to your question so but that's really going to depend on is there going to be an application process and then we're going to take it family by family and student by student so let me give you an example if you said all I want to be remote next year or learn virtually then we would have some questions about your situation without like getting into two personal stuff but we'd want to know like do you really need remote or do it is it like I just wanted to stay home then once it was that happens then we're able to just make that decision I got to be honest at the high school level if a student is remote it's not going to look like what it look like this year because that's too much for a teacher in high school it's different because you have all these our class is an elective so if you choose to go remote it at the secondary level like high school you can be real Limited in what you can participate in that means probably no Athletics probably no band and then your elective choices start appear so if your remote then you're really only thinking about your core classes and then we're finding some other way for you to on a computer catch up on the credits you need okay so on that topic then I will probably be difficult a like it kind of like explaining how would you like to minimize the the electives for classes for the students can you explain that a little more so if your virtual if we don't have teachers that are actually teaching remote for those electives then that means they pretty much don't exist. For a month student so we don't want to if you have a 16 if we want to keep you from addressing that concern in protecting protecting your own help but there's there's a there's a there's a bit of a like a cost to it and the cost is you don't get to participate in all the things a high school has to offer and you know for a lot of is that High School experience has a lot of those extracurricular right now like this wouldn't be a virtual option for you to be on zoom zoom and be the yearbook together right had done done work and it didn't work you know that's part of the concern as well as for our teachers this year it was high school trying to do school and in person at the same time didn't work didn't work really well from virtual and in person and then all of a sudden they came back a lot of difficulties difficult for Susan was difficult for a teacher to what do you think as far as when you think about next year and some of the things that we're planning for next year or how do you feel about this student is how we going to say the same for me I always like coming in person I guess seeing friends and actually participating in things like this like interviewing you or put in the yearbook together first day I think it's better it'll help a lot of students get back on track I think play with their grades little help a lot to come back until I talk to you as soon as I saw her outside of the high school and I asked I said are you virtual or you in person she says I'm virtual and I said How's it because I'm so bored and I said what why didn't you come back to school and she said well it was like the work was like the same I was on the computer in school I was on the computer at home so I figure I'll just stay at home but she said like she's having a really hard time like to talk to anyone all day keep in touch with her friends and you know schools exist to make sure students are learning at the same time a big part of that High School experiences growing up in kind of finding wake your you know you're staying in this place and running with friends you have or go where you going with it it'll help a lot to come back optional for next year basically this year we know that the thing that protected people the most was wearing a mask it's a filter in Ohio I don't think I even got the cold or a flu this year in the last year I might wear one for the rest of my life that way you can I'm thinking but another part of it is we feel like vaccines are becoming still available now and now that the ages of 12 and up can get a vaccine then we feel like that's a better option for it's their choice but everyone has is starting to get the option so we feel like okay is if someone's been vaccinated then they should have the option of taking off their masks and have a level of comfort with it you know I know for myself vaccinated so uncomfortable in situations taken off my mask if my if the person around me is because I'm not worried about getting the virus or passing it on to someone else. I think I do BFB maybe this year or next year I'm starting my next year it'll be a big thing especially with the choice thing like some people might you know be affected by or something might have a different opinion about it what do you think as far as making it optional it's a good idea I mean especially if you have been vaccinated I think we good idea but you know he will be like will then you just want to see if the virus or people act like they have a different thought process and everyone else go it'll bring some eggs and I want to say the to the surface and it will be like as a leader was like I really wrestled over it but I feel and I feel as I also feel like the conditions are just right that we can create the option for people so like if I want to wear a mask and you don't like I'm still protecting myself then for you do you feel like I want maybe you've been vaccinated you feel comfortable not wearing them and it's your choice then I do think the part that makes it I'm not sure the word you use when a little uncomfortable is we don't know what it's going to feel like until those first few days were just kind of getting used to it and it's scary like in a went a whole year world we were people were in the hospital and they were people were the illness really affected them in their family and so now we're going to a place where we're having to trust that things are going to get better and don't feel better and I feel like we're there because we talked to Public Health officials we talk are the school districts and we're all kind of on that same page of it's it's time to come back to normal I'm back to normal. Normal yeah yeah yeah setting up a good idea especially going back to normal in China getting over this big hurdle I wanted a hurdle on this track again when you think about like what school is going to look like next year and I the things that I've been talking about what are some things you think are important for me to think about is the superintendent and working with all of our staff to make sure schools the best experience for our students coming back who actually being improved definitely helps a lot I mean the first you know the first six weeks we had I was failing every class I'm not going to lie I'm not going to put it out there stealing every class I was having trouble because it's hard because when you're so used to being in person and doing stuff on paper it comes a little easier to you cuz you actually with the teacher and you can actually give them properly and try to understand what they're saying but definitely being in school hasn't made it a lot better but I like my grades are better than they have and just being in school understanding every feature of the aspects of being at school. I love to hear that I do know we're going to we're going to continue like all these cleaning protocols were going to we signed on with this company that's that's going to basically sanitize the school on a regular basis like this feeling right but are there any other little things we can do to you think that can to help do this feel just comfortable coming back to school and just may make it a safe and welcoming environment I think just keeping the school yeah you know the the bathrooms of the floors do hospitals with everything you don't mix it just cleaning and out or making sure everything's clean. probably be the biggest concern for some parents and students alike and teachers even besting the beautiful school so there's the staff here are maintenance and custodial staff do an amazing job cuz I mean play still looks like it's brand new so we'll just keep that up and I appreciate you giving us that feedback as well what are the other things are going to do is we're going to continue to put information out to families in the teachers like all of our all of our teachers have had teachers and staff my brother had multiple opportunities to get a vaccine over the course of the semester so that makes us feel better that we have provided those opportunities to people the other thing is we're going to continue to send messages out to parents about like when we know of vaccine fascination where does not tell people so that way you know like they can get in and go get it over the summer and then you can help feel more comfortable about where you're at and in the fall another thing we're going to talk about doing this like you you know How We Do quarantine to learn try as much as possible to keep our students in school and maybe not send like entire classrooms home two weeks is a football team when they gone for like 3 weeks then how do you think that'll work like wood applied be quarantined like would they stay in one class from the entire day or what day would teachers like I don't know how to say like would they like move alcoholic when no one else's so what the what the we're not wearing a mask should probably be quarantined so let me give you an example of you and I are students in a classroom and I have a confirmed case of covid 4 USA wearing a mask and you were sitting next to me then you may not have to be quarantined if neither of us were in a mess we were sitting right next to each other then you may have to be quarantined it won't be the full two weeks we're going to shorten it to at least 10 days and you can possibly come back earlier if you can provide like a negative covid test and then we would really try to isolate who was around Devin the student when when he tested positive okay will the testing I know a lot of people don't have like they say they don't have time or they don't have access to the test how do you think that would work with you if you think the school district would be like providing yes I'm glad you asked so couple things if you pretend you're quarantined and you you wanted to come back earlier than 10 days it would be your family's responsibility to go get a covid test somewhere which we believe that you used to be able to go to a CVS or Walgreens in and go get one actually here at the school we the nurses Clinic actually has covid 12 so if you don't feel good today and you think all I wonder if I've covid Ashley gets robbed in the clinic and they can tell you and then they can tell you like in 15 minutes if your father knew that when did this mind if I started in March and we put some information out to our parents about it but I don't think anyone knows unless you have to go to the nurses clinic and then like if you weren't feeling good then she would have access to do a swap it's actually a self swab so she hands you the Q-tip and like a little vial and you swab yourself and you put it in the vial and then wait 15 minutes and find out the news I really think that a lot of people know about I mean I already had been tested so that's a big thing I guess now that's great actually stay off for people who just come in and you know the temperature and it was like are you feeling good and I think that's a good thing now especially with her movie theater near the questions for me I think that's about it actually
