Taylor Duck Baseball Program Weekly Recap

May 1, 2022

This past week, the Ducks squared off with the Georgetown Gateway Gators in their final two regular season contests of the spring season. On Tuesday, Taylor traveled to Gateway, and took an exciting senior night victory away from the Gators! Matthew Aplin took the ball on the mound, and threw an excellent game, tossing a complete game, 7 innings in the victory. Aplin allowed only 1 run on 6 hits, 10 strikeouts, and 0 walks in the effort. Offensively, Cohen Tyree led the way, going 2-3 at the plate with a single, and a homerun (2nd of the year), and driving in 3 of Taylors 4 runs. Jake Jansky drove in the 4th run on an RBI single. Vega, Treuter and Hartman all hit safely in the contest as well.

On Friday, Taylor hosted Gateway to wrap up our final district series of the season. Chris Perez delivered a strong start on the mound, throwing a complete game, 7 innings. Perez allowed only 1 run on 4 hits, and 10 strikeouts in the game. Offensively, Taylor collected 9 hits, including a 2-RBI home run from Jake Jansky (1st career home run)! Devin Valdez also posted an RBI triple at a big moment, and Cohen Tyree drove in a run as well on a RBI single. Aiden Aguero had a RBI in the contest as well. Adame, Hartman, Perez and Trueter all hit safely in the game for Taylor in addition.

Although the sweep of Gateway had no impact on district standings or play-off positioning, our coaching staff is very proud that we are able to put a group of guys on the field every night that compete to win. The Ducks will ride a 3-game win streak into our Bi-District playoff matchup versus Smithville. Details below.

Our Sub Varsity team wrapped up their season this week, with a very competitive two games against the Gators, in which the home team won each game. After dropping Tuesday's contest 6-5 in the final inning, Taylor struck early and often on Friday to take a commanding win 11-1. Several Ducks posted big weeks offensively, and nearly the whole squad hit safely at least one time over the two games. Pitching was strong, with Deacon Stokes and Mario Aguero carrying the load for the week. Stokes earned the victory on Friday, allowing only 1 earned run and striking out 7 Gators.

Our Junior Varsity guys have done a tremendous job this year of showing up, working hard, and competing at a high level. The Taylor Ducks opened up rounds 2 and 3 (play the same team twice per week) of district
play this week, traveling to Salado on Tuesday, and hosting Salado on Friday. Fans received
their money’s worth on Tuesday, as the contest went 10 innings! Devin Valdez started on the
hill for Taylor, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 5 strikeouts, and lasted 6.2 innings. Matt
Aplin earned the victory in an extended relief effort, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit
and 6 strikeouts to close out the game for Taylor. Offensively, the Ducks Dominick Hartman and
Cohen Tyree led the way, each tallying 2 hits on the night. Tyree also drove in the go ahead run
in the top of the 10th, scoring Hartman. Matt Aplin had a hit, and scored a run, and Jake Jansky
had an RBI single as well. Chris Perez drove in a run also, scoring Jonah Adame, who reached
base via error.
Chris Perez got the start in Friday’s contest, and delivered a very strong performance, putting
the Ducks in a position to win (6.1IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 13K’s). Taylor went into the final frame of the
conest up 5-2, but Salado rallied and tied the game at 5. The action came in the bottom of the
7th. With two outs, Turner on 2nd (reached via hit by pitch), Aplin on 1st (reached via hit by
pitch), Ashton Vega connected with a 1-1 fastball and dropped in over the head of the shortstop
to bring home Tuner to walk-off Salado. Vega had two hits in the contest. The Ducks totaled 9
hits in all; Vega, Aplin, Schroeder had two hits a piece; Tyree, Hartman, Perez each hit safely
and drove in runs as well. Nick Treuter drove in a run, scoring Devin Valdez, on a sacrifice fly.
Matthew Aplin worked in his second relief appearance of the week, and earned his second
victory of the week on the mound, facing two Salado hitters, striking out one.
The win puts the Ducks in sole possession of the top spot in District 19-4A, but with 4 series still
to play, the boys cannot be satisfied just yet.
Looking ahead, Taylor will travel to and host Jarrell this week to finish off that district series. The
Ducks will travel to Jarrell on Tuesday, April 5th at 4:30PM and thost Jarrell on Friday, April 8th
at 7PM. Both contests are critical again, as the Ducks can lock up a play-off position with a

On Tuesday, the Ducks hosted 6A Copperas Cove. For those in attendance, as well as those
watching on GameChanger, it was worth the time investment for sure. Taylor walked off Cove
via strikeout, which was a personal first for me. Chris Perez started on the mound, throwing 4
innings, striking out 10. Jake Jansky worked the final 3 frames, allowing no earned runs, and
striking out 4. Offensively, Jackson Schroeder led the way, knocking a 2-RBI double,
accounting for half of Taylor’s runs. Dominick Hartman added a double as well, and Cohen
Tyree added a single. Jansky walked, and stole a couple of huge bases, ultimately being
responsible for the tying run. Jacob Turner later drew a walk, and made his way around the
base paths to score the winning run.
On Thursday, the Ducks traveled to Cameron, and competed against two historically powerful
baseball programs. Devin Valdez took the ball against West, and went the distance, throwing 6
innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned), and striking out 10. Conner Barcuch led the charge
offensively, posting two hits, a single and a double,3 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored. Final score

for the Ducks. Ashton Vega and Jackson Schroeder each hit safely, as did Jacob Turner and
Coby Hanson, who both posted their first hits on the season. For Hanson, who hit a homerun in
a junior varsity contest last week, his double was also his first career varsity hit. Cohen Tyree

All five of Taylor’s primary starters have earned victories on the mound. A great sign for the

The Taylor Duck Baseball JV Team had a tough week, starting the week playing split-squad
games at half strength against some very stiff competition. Although Taylor would come up
short in those contests, the experience, and the innings each of the boys got in doing so will no
doubt make them stronger players.
At the end of the week, our JV traveled to Copperas Cove to compete in a very strong JV
tournament. When the dust settled, the Ducks were 1-3 against some stiff competition, and
were in every game with chances to change the tides.

Taylor Duck Baseball Program Weekly Recap

Varsity Baseball

Season Record

The Taylor Duck Varsity Baseball Team had a busy, and exciting first week of action. The Ducks opened the season on the road against at 5A Bastrop program, and the game did not disappoint. Although we ultimately fell to Bastrop 4-3 in 10 innings, the extra-inning contest provided an opportunity for 3 Duck pitchers to work. All 3 were on the mound, making their first varsity appearances. Sophomore Chris Perez got the start, and threw 4.1 innings of high quality baseball, allowing 0 runs, on 0 hits, and striking out 9 bears. Sophomore Devin Valdez worked in middle relief, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing 0 earned runs, and striking out 7 bears. Junior Jake Jansky worked the final inning. Offensively, it was a tough go for most of the night, battling high winds that did not work in Taylor’s favor. Hard hit balls all night turned into routine plays, but that's baseball. Freshman Nick Treuter had a couple of firsts, throwing out his first runner from behind the plate of his varsity career, and collecting his first career hit. Conner Barcuch also collected his first career varsity hit. Cohen Tyree got in the hit column as well, legging out an opposite field RBI triple for his first base hit of the season.

On Thursday, The Ducks traveled to the Coastal Bend to play in the Sinton Pirate Invitational. Despite the weather, even down south, we were able to get in three games against some stiff competition. Thursday night, the Ducks took on the #1 Ranked Sinton Pirates, and rose to the occasion. Sophomore Chris Perez took the ball for Taylor, throwing 6 innings, allowing three runs (2 earned), on 4 hits, and striking out 9 Pirates. Jake Jansky collected his first official varsity hit; a double, and later scored Taylors only run. Although we fell by a final score of 3-1, there is nothing like being within striking distance on the top 4A team in the state.

After cancellations on Friday (and some team bonding and competition at the bowling alley), the Ducks returned to the field on Saturday for a double header with Robstown, another program with a rich history of winning at the highest level, the Robstown Cottonpickers. Devin Valdez took the ball in game one, and put together another very strong performance, lasting 5.1 innings, striking out 7. A 1-run game into the final frame, this one ended a little lopsided in favor of Robstown by a final score of 7-0. Chris Perez logged his first career varsity hit in this contest as well.

In game two, the Ducks were finally able to crack the win column this week, outlasting Robstown by a final score of 1-0. Senior Matthew Aplin got the start on the mound, and delivered 7 innings of high quality work, allowing no runs, on only two hits, and 10 strikeouts. Sophomore Dominick Hartman drove in the Ducks only run on an RBI single, tallying his first hit of the season. Senior Jackson Schroeder had a 2-hit game, leading Taylor in that category.

A special thanks to everyone who made the trip. Despite the weather, cancellations, reschedules, we had more fans in the stands on Saturday in Robstown than the home team. Incredible support! Thank you.
