This past week, the Ducks squared off with the Burnet Bulldogs twice to wrap up our district series against one another.  On Tuesday, the Ducks hosted the Bulldogs; the night began with Taylor honoring its 11 seniors and their families.  I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank you all for the positive impact each of you has left on the baseball program over the past four years.  Thank you.  The game was all Taylor.  Jayden Simank started on the mound, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and 16 strikeouts.  David Ortiz finished the final 1.2 innings, striking out 4, and allowing nothing else.  Offensively, the Ducks put up 11 runs on 8 hits, and 7 walks.  Cohen Tyree and Ashton Vega both collected extra-base hits, while Ortiz, Quintanilla, Schroeder, Turner and Aplin (2 hits) all hit safely as well.  Ryan Kennick threw out ⅓ base runners from behind the plate as well.  Final Score 11-2.

On Friday, roles were reversed, as Taylor traveled to Burnet, and Burnet hosted and honored their senior players.  The game, however, ultimately went the way of the Ducks.  Isaac RIvera started on the mound for Taylor, throwing 6 innings, allowing 1 run, on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 9 strikeouts.  Matthew Aplin threw the final inning, allowing 1 hit, and striking out 2.  Offensively, Cohen Tyree (1RBI), David Ortiz (2RBI) and Ryan Kennick (3RBI) all posted multi-hit games.  Fabian, Rivera, Simank and Aplin all hit safely one time as well.

The Ducks two wins this week keep them in a tie with Lake Belton, and in the hunt for a district championship.  Taylor will take on Georgetown Gateway this week, at home on Tuesday, and on the road on Friday.  Taylor needs to win both contests in order to stay in the hunt for a district championship.

**If you were in attendance Friday night, you probably noticed that we were missing a key piece of our coaching staff.  This weekend, Coach McQuillen and his wife, Sara, welcomed their first child, a boy, and future Duck!  Stried Allan McQuillen.  Please congratulate them if you have the opportunity!

District Record 8-3

This week was crazy!!  The Ducks took on a very tough Lake Belton team twice this week, traveling to Lake Belton on Tuesday, and hosting the Broncos on Friday.  Both games (just like the first game between us) went extra innings.  On Tuesday, Taylor outplayed Lake Belton in just about every category, but ultimately did not come away with the win.  The Broncos were able to plate a run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a walk-off hit.  Matthew Aplin had a strong outing on the mound, throwing 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, 3 strikeouts and 4 walks.  Aplin also had a 2-hit game offensively.  Cohen Tyree had a stellar game at the plate, collecting 3 hits, 1 being a double.  Isaac RIvera hit a triple in the game as well.  Despite the positives, it wasn’t quite enough to overtake Lake Belton.  Final score, 6-5.

Friday’s game was on another level - - the energy our fans brought no doubt had a say in the final outcome of the game!  From our players and coaching staff, we cannot thank our fans enough for the strong show of support.  Krueger Field was LOUD!  A very special thanks to our Duck Softball team for bringing the girls over after their win, our students for their energy and support, our parents for regrouping and finding creative ways to be loud after being outnumbered Tuesday night on the road, and especially our Administration for wrangling and managing our student section - - I believe I may have even say Mr. Maddox showing some of our JV plays how to make a little extra noise at one point!  Isaac Rivera started on the mound, and delivered a fantastic performance.  Isaac went 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 10 strikeouts.  Jayden Simank came on in relief, and delivered his most efficient performance of the season to earn a victory.  Jayden threw 2.2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 0 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.  Braylan Alderete drove in Taylors first run, scoring Cohen Tyree who had another 3 hit game.  David Ortiz, Chris Fabian and Jacob Turner also collected base hits.  The game came down to the wire, but the Ducks were able to get a walk-off run across when Ryan Kennick hit a hard ground ball to third, and Lake Belton committed a very untimely error, allowing Isaiah Quintanilla to score from second base.  Final Score 2-1.

The win puts the Ducks back in a tie for the district lead, with 4 games to play in the district schedule.  This week, Taylor will host Burnet for Senior Night on Tuesday, and then travel to Burnet on Friday.  The JV will play prior to both contests.  Our JV2 will also travel to Burnet on Monday for a double header against the Bulldogs.

Taylor vs. Lake Belton JV Recap.  On Tuesday, Chris Perez earned a victory against the Broncos on the road as well.  Chris pitched 5 strong innings for Taylor and also drove in 2 runs at the plate.  The JV game was tight, and just as exciting as the varsity games this week.  The boys did a great job competing and bringing home a victory against a very tough opponent.

The Ducks completed a program sweep of Jarrell this week, officially winning all scheduled contests against the Cougars.  On Tuesday, the Ducks hosted the Cougars for JV/Varsity contests.  The JV Ducks took the victory 12-0 behind a very good start on the mound from Conner Barcuch, who threw a complete game shut-out.  The Varsity team posted 10 hits, including multi-hit games from Matthew Aplin (5 RBI’s) and Braylan Alderete (4 RBI’s).  Isaiah Quintanilla also added a triple, and scored a run.  Jayden Simank went the distance on the mound, and was able to work around a few too many free bases to only allow one Cougar run, on 1 hit, and 9 strikeouts.

On Friday, the Ducks traveled to Jarrell for their final matchup of the season with the Cougars.  Taylors JV2 traveled for the sub-varsity contest, and came away with a 14-4 road victory.  Coby Hanson earned player of the game honors for Taylor, having an impressive day at the plate to lead Taylor offensively.  Anthony Bussey earned the victory on the mound, and Deacon Stokes did a solid job in a relief role to seal the victory.  Isaac Rivera got the start for Taylor, throwing 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 6 free bases, and 13 strikeouts.  David Ortiz worked the 7th, striking out 3.  Offensively, Taylor’s bats were flat all evening, but the boys managed to string together 5 hits, and rack up 7 runs, which would be enough to win the contest.  Jacob Turner had a 2-hit night, and drove in 2 runs.  Cohen Tyree hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot.

The sweep of Jarrell keeps Taylor in a two-way tie for the district lead, with Lake Belton High School.  The Ducks will travel to Lake Belton on Tuesday, and host Lake Belton on Friday night.

The Taylor Ducks opened up rounds 2 and 3 (play the same team twice per week) of district play this week, hosting Salado on Monday, and traveling to Salado on Thursday.  Despite a strong night (13 strikeouts) on the mound from Jayden Simank, 6 walks and 2 errors proved to be the difference in the game, as Salado came away on top by a final score of 6-1.  David Ortiz, Isaac Rivera, Jayden Simank and Ryan Kennick all collected base hits for Taylor, and Cohen Tyree drove in the only Duck run of the night.

Thursday was a different story entirely, as the Ducks rolled in to Salado with a renewed sense of purpose, and energy.  Isaac Rivera was on the mound, and delivered a complete game victory, striking out 10 Eagle hitters, and allowing 2 runs (1 Earned) on 3 hits and 0 free bases.  Offensively, Taylor collected 8 hits, including doubles from Cohen Tyree and Braylan Alderete.  Jacob Turner and Jayden Simank both had multi-hit nights and Ashton Vega and David Ortiz hit safely once each as well.  The Ducks came out with crucial road victory, by a final score of 5-2.

Looking ahead, Taylor will host and travel to Jarrell this week to finish off that district series.  The Ducks will host Jarrell on Tuesday, April 6th at 7PM and travel to Jarrell on Friday, April 9th at 7PM.  Both contests are critical again, as the district is knotted up in a three-way tie at the top once again.

Our Duck sub-varsity baseball teams played for games this week against a solid Salado program.  Our JV2 came away with victories on the road in both of their contests, winning 10-3 and 9-3, respectively, in a Tuesday double header.  Our JV hosted Salado on Monday and traveled to Salado on Thursday, prior to the varsity contests.  The Ducks came away victorious on Monday, but fell to the Eagles on Thursday.

Looking forward to this week, our sub-varsity teams have two games on the schedule with Jarrell.  Unfortunately Jarrell was not able to keep their JV2 season intact, so those games were cancelled.

Our plan for this week is to play our JV on Tuesday vs. Jarrell, and our JV2 on Friday vs. Jarrell to ensure that we get all of our sub-varsity players on the field this week.  More details on those rosters will be posted for the boys tomorrow, but they will be similar to last weeks.

Season Record 13-3

District Record 4-1

From Coach Justin Adams:  The Taylor Duck Varsity Baseball Team had two consequential district ball games this week, traveling to Burnet on Tuesday, and to Georgetown Gateway on Friday.  While both contests delivered some excitement, they were very different.  The Ducks defeated Burnet on Tuesday in a low scoring affair, 2-0.  Jayden Simank  started on the mound, and had a terrific night, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks, and 11 strikeouts.  David Ortiz earned his third save of the season, coming in and recording the final out.  Although offense was hard to come by, Taylor managed to get 2 runs across.  Jayden Simank reached on an error, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cohen Tyree, and Isaac Rivera reached base via walk, and later scored on a fielder’s choice ground out from Eathan Sanchez.

On Friday, the Ducks traveled to Georgetown Gateway.  Isaac Rivera toed the rubber for Taylor, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing 0 runs, on 2 hits, 4 free bases, and striking out 8.  David Ortiz came in for the second time this week to record the final out and got the job done.  Offensively, the Ducks exploded for 14 hits, including 8 singles, 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 homerun (Ashton Vega, #2 on the season).  Simank, Tyree, Vega, Rivera all collected extra base hits, while several Ducks (Tyree, Ortiz, Rivera, Turner, Simank, Aplin) all collected base hits as well.

The Ducks win Friday night created a 3 way tie for the top spot in the district between Taylor, Lake Belton and Gateway heading into the final round of district play.  The Ducks will play Salado twice this week, at home on Monday, and on the road on Tuesday to wrap up that series.  Both are 7PM starts.

Varsity Scores from Week 5

Taylor 2 - Burnet 0

Taylor 10 - Georgetown Gateway 0

The Taylor Duck sub-varsity teams had a strong week as well.  On Monday, our JV2 hosted Burnet, and came away with an 8-0 victory in that contest behind a strong start on the mound from Devin Valdez.  On Tuesday, our JV traveled to Burnet to take on the Bulldogs prior to the varsity game.  The Ducks started slow in that contest, and allowed Burnet to jump ahead to an early lead, but rallied back late in the game and came up with some big hits to force a 6-6 tie.  On Friday, the JV Ducks traveled to Gateway and came away with a 6-6 victory in that contest behind starting pitcher Chris Perez, and some outstanding defensive plays from second baseman Conner Barcuch.

Our JV will host Salado on Monday, and travel to Salado on Friday.  Both are 4:30PM start times.  Our JV will travel to Salado for a double header on Tuesday, start time is 5PM in that contest.

Season Record 11-3

District Record 2-1

The Ducks stayed hard at work during spring break this week.  On Tuesday, Taylor traveled to Jarrell for a district contest.  Taylor came out victorious in that contest, as all phases of the game were firing on all cylinders.  The Ducks scored 21 runs on 13 hits, including two triples (Issac Rivera and Isaiah Quintanilla) and one Homerun (Cohen Tyree, first of the season).  Taylor pitching was strong once more, as Matthew Aplin threw a complete game, striking out 12 batters, and allowing only 1 run on 4 hits.  On Friday night, the Ducks hosted a very formidable opponent in the Lake Belton Broncos.  For those in attendance (and there were a lot in attendance), they got to witness 9 innings of play-off atmosphere baseball.  Taylor ultimately came out on the losing end of the contest, however, the Ducks were a big swing, or a 50/50 call away from being on top.  Isaac Rivera started on the mound, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 7.  David Ortiz took the mound in a relief appearance, throwing 2.1 solid innings, allowing 2 runs (unearned) on 2 hits, striking out 4.  Taylor’s offense out hit the Broncos, but was ultimately unable to manufacture enough runs to win the contest.  Defensively, the Ducks played great for 8 of the 9 innings of the game.  Ultimately, Taylor’s defense kept us in the game early, and cost the game late.  Luke Ramirez had 3 big putouts at second base, and Cohen Tyree had 4 big putouts at 3rd.  Our boys are eagerly looking forward to our next two games against Lake Belton, however, the week ahead is vitally important.  The Ducks will travel to Burnet on Tuesday, and to Georgetown Gateway on Friday.

Taylor’s Junior Varsity Baseball team earned two victories this week, against Jarrell and Lake Belton, in two district contests.  Four pitchers teamed up throughout the week to handle the workload for the Ducks on the mound.  Chris Perez (4IP, 2R, 7K’s), Devin Valdez (3IP, 1R, 6K’s), Aiden Aguero (2IP, 0R, 2K’s) and Ryan Valdez (2IP, 0R, 2K’s) all looked sharp in their opportunities on the mound.  Aguero, Perez, Barcuch, Jansky, Adame, and Ryan Valdez all led the way offensively for Taylor.  On an interesting note, Taylor hit 4 triples this week.  Aiden Aguero, Coby Hanson, Mason Hortenstine, and Devin Valdez all collected 3-base hits this week.

The Taylor Duck Varsity had a light, but very productive week this week.  On Monday, the Ducks earned an accolade from Texas High School Baseball (txhighschoolbaseball.com), and were named Runner-Up 4A Team of the Week for our play in week 1.

On Tuesday, the Ducks hosted 5A Bastrop in their home opener, and won in an exciting pitcher’s duel.  Isaac Rivera earned the victory for the Ducks, throwing a complete game shutout.  Rivera struck out an astounding 19 Bastrop hitters, walked 0, and allowed 5 hits.  Offensively, the Ducks were led by Cohen Tyree, who collected the only two Taylor hits, and drove in one run.  Ryan Kennick added a Run Batted In on a sacrifice fly late in the game that gave Taylor a 2-0 lead, which would be the final score.

The Taylor Duck Baseball Sub-Varsity Teams had a busy, and very successful week of baseball.  On Monday, March 1, our JV2 hosted Wimberley for a double header.  Wimberley came out on top in game one, and in game two, the Ducks rallied late to tie the game as time expired.  On Tuesday, the JV traveled to Bastrop for a double header, and came out victorious in both games by lopsided scores.

At the end of the week, our JV2 traveled to Copperas Cove to compete in a very strong JV tournament.  When the dust settled, the Ducks were 2-2-1 against some stiff competition, and were in every game with chances to change the tides.  On Saturday, the Duck JV Team traveled to Rockdale for a double header, where they again came out victorious in lopsided affairs.

Season Record 5-1

The Taylor Duck Varsity Baseball Team competed in the West Tournament this past Thursday-Saturday.  Despite the early mornings, long drives and late nights, the boys competed hard and got their season started off on a very positive note.  Taylor finished the weekend with a 5-1 record, and more importantly, came home with many positives in all phases of the game.

The Duck Pitching Staff had an outstanding weekend, allowing only 5 earned runs all weekend, and striking out 51 opposing hitters.  Isaac Rivera struck out 14 through 6 innings of work, Jayden Simank struck out 11 through 6.2 innings, David Ortiz struck out 9 through 7 innings, and Matthew Apling struck out 6 in 3 innings on the mound.  The Duck pitching staff posted a 1.00ERA through 6 games this weekend.

Offensively, Taylor collected 47 base hits over the weekend, including 6 doubles and 2 triples.  Cohen Tyree led the way offensively, posting 9 base hits (7 singles, 2 doubles) driving in 8 runs, and not striking out a single time.  Jacob Turner (5-1B’s, 1-2B), Jayden Simank (5-1B’s, 1-3B) and Matthew Aplin (5-1B’s, 1-2B) all put up 6-hit weekends as well.

Other noteworthy performances were: Ryan Kennick, who caught a staggering 32 innings behind the plate this weekend.  Kennick threw out three runners on seven attempts and also added 3 hits (1-2B), and 3 walks offensively.  Kennick reached base in 2/3s of his trips to the plate.  Braylan Aldrete (Fr) collected both his first base hit in high school, and his first varsity hit, (3 Total).   Alderete also earned his first Save on the mound in our final game against West.

On Friday, February 26th, our sub-varsity teams had the unique experience of playing up a level and gaining some valuable experience.  Our JV2 group competed against Thrall’s JV, and our JV team competed against Thralls Varsity, under the Friday night lights!  Anthony Bussey was the stand out performer in the JV2 game, working 4 innings on the mound, and earning the victory.  Bussey also had a double and three runs batted in offensively.

Taylor JV2 9 - Thrall JV 8

The JV game was a thriller, as our JV group committed a critical error with only an out to go to seal a victory, and allowed Thrall to tie the game at 2-2.  Thrall went on to win in extra innings 3-2.  Freshman Chris Perez had an outstanding night, throwing 6 ⅔ innings, striking out 17 Tigers on the night.  Perez also hit a solo homerun, which immediately followed an Aiden Aguero solo homerun, which would be all of Taylor offense for the night.  Overall, this was an incredible atmosphere for our boys and irreplaceable experience for our baseball program.
